What do HR in High-Growth Companies do? Meet more, and Schmooze (with IT!)

New research may well have just confirmed HR’s deepest fears – more meetings with line managers lead to greater success.

Sounds crazy, right?

Well apparently it’s not. Recent figures show that high-growth organisations actually have more frequent interactions between HR and line managers.

This may well suggest that more regular communication equals faster and better workforce decision making processes.

The study, Future Business: Unleashing Your Talent, by IDC, sponsored by Cornerstone OnDemand interviewed 1,469 HR professionals and line of business managers across 14 European countries working in organisations with more than 500 employees.

Their finding: In fast-growing companies HR communicates more regularly with line managers.

Surprisingly, results showed that the average annual number of recruitment-focused meetings between HR and line managers is 21 per year for companies with higher growth rates, versus 15 in other organisations.

The study told a similar story for performance review discussions, where HR teams and line managers in high-growth organisations (growing by 11% or more per annum) scheduled 14 performance reviews per year, on average.

Conversely, organisations growing at less than 11% per annum, had only 6.

Christine Chenneour, HR & talent director at Cornerstone OnDemand, said:

“Many grumble about too many meetings, or meetings being unproductive, but our findings shows a correlation between a higher frequency of meetings and higher-growth organisations.

For HR to be strategic, the key is to have meetings and give ‘air-time’ to subjects that matter to business success and matters concerning the workforce are instrumental in that.

The higher number of interactions means there is better understanding and collaboration between HR and managers leading to better hires, more motivated employees, and retention of talent.”

IT is a key partner for HR in High-Growth Organisations

The results also showed high-growth organisations have a stronger relationship between HR and IT compared with those where that connection is weak or ineffective.

When asked whether they agree that HR and IT are well aligned, 67% of respondents from high-growth organisations responded positively.

This number falls to 58% for other organisations.

IDC have concluded that HR understands the needs and skill requirements of IT, whilst IT can better support HR in new technology and collaboration systems.

This survey follows 2016’s Future People: Workplace Evolution in the Age of Digital Transformation.

Supporting this year’s findings, the 2016 study found that high-growth organisations have a higher percentage of collaborative practices.

What really makes the difference?

Of course, it’s not simply an increased volume of meetings, performance reviews or interdepartmental communication that produce better results for these organisations.

What really makes the difference is the dynamic between the HR teams and line managers, and the outcomes, follow-up and execution that follows.

Productive meetings (and effective collaboration on the whole) are founded on the ability of team members across all departments, to listen and communicate with awareness, empathy and openness to the styles and perspectives of each other.

In truth, understanding how to collaborate and communicate with the wide range of varying personalities amongst HR and Management teams can be tough.

And although it doesn’t traditionally come naturally to HR teams and line managers, this study clearly shows that high-growth organisations understand regular communication and well-executed meetings between HR and Management are still an essential part of creating outstanding results…

…despite what most of them might think!
